If people know you are an artist, writer or musician, they don't think you work. They assume they can stop by anytime and you will drop what ever you are doing so you can entertain them. They believe you should have no problem serving on various committees because you have time on your hands. What they don't understand is that creative work is also mental work. Even if you are not physically working, you mind is working overtime. As creative leaders we need to learn to say no. Don't allow others to steal time away from your work. Stand strong and firm even if they beg.

We humans love to measure time and to reflect on where we have been and where we want to go. If we have not published our first book by the time we are thirty, we may never publish a book. If we live to be sixty, we are suddenly over the hill and unemployable. Unless, of course, we are running for President.
My time on this planet has taught me that as much as things change they still remain the same. What once was old comes back in fashion. And what we believe to be new and exciting will soon fade away. The story you are writing has been written before. The painting you are painting has been painted before. And yet each of us must believe that we are the first. That no one has done this before.
Yesterday, I quoted Gladys Taber who in her lifetime published more than 60 books. Yet, until yesterday I had never heard of her. We may be celebrated in our lifetime but forgotten after we die. Or we may be unknown in our lifetime and remembered for hundreds of years. Time has a way of playing tricks on us. We think we have mastered it and it sneaks a way from us.
As you reflect today on what happened to you in 2011 and dream about what will happen in 2012, remember that nothing stays the same and nothing change. Don't worry about the passing of time. Be happy with who you are and whom you have become. Celebrate the new year with open arms.

Do you have enough time to do everything you need and want to do? Probably most of you answered no. We are a culture obsessed with time. And there never seems to be enough. And for some of us we have to squeeze our creative work in between everything else we do. I rise an hour before I have to in order to write. I sometimes write over my lunch hour. Or when my wife goes to the mall, I tag along and sit at a table and write.
But if we are honest with ourselves, we probably waste time. What do you do driving to and from work? I listen to books on CD. What do you do when you are sitting at the doctor's office waiting to see the doctor? Can you steal 10 or 15 minutes to write or draw. We all have the same amount of time — 24 hours a day. The key is how we prioritize. It is all about choices. We do what we want to do.

From time to time people have predicted the end of the world and their followers have given up their worldly goods and waited — only to find they waited in vain. Yes, the world as we know it will come to an end one day. But none of us now living will be here to see it. In the past, civilizations have come and gone. Think Mayan, Aztec, Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Chinese. One day our civilization will also pass into history.
And even the animals and plants come and go. Remember the dinosaurs? The human animal too will disappear from this earth and a new species will appear. But don't fear neither you nor your children or grandchildren will be here to witness it.
So if by some freak accident, you had the opportunity to be on this earth on the last day before the total destruction of the earth, what would you do? Would you plant a tree as Merwin suggests? Talk about optimism in the face of disaster.
Over the last thirty years, Merwin, who lives in Hawaii, has planted more then 4,000 trees on 19 acres that were once considered a wasteland. He has planted 850 different species of trees. Here is the complete poem from which this quote comes.

Do you love what you do? If you can't answer yes to this question, then you need to find something else to do or learn to love what you do. Failure to love what we do brings about despair and unhappiness. Creative leaders love creativity and their chosen medium of expression. Creative leaders have a deep, burning passion for their art, their writing or their dancing.
Life is too short to waste time doing something you don't enjoy. Yes, we all have a need to make money and we may not make money from our chosen artistic endeavor, but we need to find a way to love the job that pays the bills. We need to pay the bills so we can do what we love to do.
Do you have an attitude of gratitude? Do you say thank you every day for the gift of self-expression that you have been given? Do you say thank you for being alive? For breathing the air? For family and friends? For your health? For the food on the table? For the muse on your shoulder? We have so much to be thankful for?

Are you doing the creative work that you ought to be doing — that only you can do? In today's world it is easy to get sidetracked and caught up in projects that have nothing to do with our true work. There are many people and things that demand our attention and time. If you don't know what creative work you are supposed to be doing it is easy to get lost. Do you have a vision of the work that you should be doing? Do you stay focused or are you easily distracted?
Will the creative work that you are doing still be communicating to generations to come? Or will your work be forgotten as soon as you leave this world? No one can predict which poems, or paintings or sculptures will last for centuries and which are meant for the dustbins of time. Many artists and writers dream and hope that their creative works will give them immortality.

Most of us live in the past with occasional ventures into the future. The time spent in the present is minuscule. The present moment no more than arrives and it is gone, quickly becoming a part of our memory. Time passes second by second and we watch it leave.
Are you frustrated because there is not enough time in a day to do all the painting or writing that you want to do? Do you wish you had more time to do the things you want to do? Modern life is hectic and it gets faster and faster every year. Ever since man invented the first machine, we have been promised that we would gain more time to do the things we wanted to do. And it has never happened. Cell phones, I-Pads and computers do not make our lives easier. We have to work longer and harder just to stay even. We are now in touch with the world 24/7.
I talked with a salesman who said that thirty years ago he would leave town for a week. He would tell his secretary to take any messages and to tell the people he would call them when he returned. He says that today if he don't return a call within 15 minutes he has lost the sale.
So what does this have to do with creative leadership? Each of us have 86,400 seconds a day to spend as we choose. How do you spend your seconds? Doing the things you want to do or doing what others want you to do? Do you spend your seconds focused on the past and what has already happened or do you spend your seconds in the present creating new works of art?
We all have been given the same amount of time each day. We can not change the amount of time we have. But we can choose how we spend it. Be surely to spend your time wisely.

"Literature and music exist in time: they have a beginning and an end. Painting and sculpture exist in space. . . . Where does the Venus de Milo begin: in her navel, in her breasts, or in her head? Where does an abstract painting begin: in the lower left corner, or in the center?"
De Paso has raised a very interesting question: where does a painting or a sculpture begin? When analyzing a painting, people often identify at what point the eye is drawn into the painting. At what point do we the viewer enter into the picture? But that point of entry is not the beginning of the painting. In fact, paintings and sculptures have no beginning. They just are here and now.
The flip side of this question is: where does the novel exist? In the head of the writer? On the pages of the book it is printed in? In cyberspace somewhere? Or in the head of the reader? And what novel are we talking about? Is the novel that is in the writer's head the same as the novel on the page? Is the novel that is in the reader's head the same as what is in the writer's imagination?

How many times have you as a reader altered the novel on the page by changing the looks of a character or the physical location of the story. Unlike the painting which is concrete and visual, the novel is nebulous and changing. Yes, we can impose our stories upon the painting, but the painting still exists outside of us. We change the novel as soon as it enters our brain. We have altered the story as imagined by the novelist.
Have you ever wished that a novel would not end? You may even have slowed down your reading so that the ending would be delayed? Novels exist in time and have a beginning and a ending, but we can continue to revisit them through our memory.
