Motivational Success Quotes From Some Very Influential People

These are just some of the many success quotes that I’ve come across that truly have inspired me.  I hope they will inspire you to live a successful life as well.

“The most successful companies in the world know that valued employees are their most precious resource. Valuable employees pass their value on to customers.” Denis Waitley

“The more success you have, the more opportunities there will be for distractions…If you are under pressure today, if the critical voices are coming against you, know that it’s because you are making a difference.” Joel Osteen

“Your success depends on how well you think. You are not paid to collect, sort, store or retrieve information, although you do these things every day. You are paid to interpret that information and create and implement new ideas.” Denis Waitley

“The only way to ever attain success and enjoy it is to achieve it honestly with pride in what you’ve done.” Jim Rohn

“Well, I believe there are actually some things that are more valuable than capital that can lead to your entrepreneurial success. Let me give you the list.… Time… Desperation… Determination… Ambition… Faith… Ingenuity… Heart and Soul… Personality…” Jim Rohn

“Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.” Jim Rohn

“Success is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration…A thought has zero value without execution behind it. You’ve got to start putting the pieces together. It’s the middle of the sandwich that makes the sandwich what it’s worth. The bread is the ideas, the concepts, how it looks from the outside. The inner workings differentiate true winners.” Mehmet Oz

“What is the one thing you could do today that when completed would make you feel that you had a successful day? Ok, stop doing anything else, and do that one thing. Celebrate at the end of the day. Do this every day for one year and you will have 365 successful days. How would your life be different if you had 365 successful days in the next year?” Sean Mize

“All you have to do is act now! Start with the smallest discipline that corresponds to your own philosophy. Make the commitment: ‘I will discipline myself to achieve my goals so that in the years ahead I can celebrate my successes.’” Jim Rohn

“Success is goals and all else is commentary. This is the great discovery throughout all of human history. Your life only begins to become a great life when you clearly identify what it is that you want, make a plan to achieve it and then work on that plan every single day.” Brian Tracy

“In every study of successful people, the acceptance of personal responsibility seems to be the starting point. Before that, nothing happens. After you accept complete responsibility, your whole life begins to change.” Brian Tracy

“Once you start meeting the goals that you set, your life will change dramatically. More time, more success, life gets better for you and your family.” Brian Tracy

“What I know for sure is that if you want to have success, you can't make success your goal… When you shift your focus from success to service, your work as a teacher, clerk, doctor, or dot-comer will instantly have more meaning.” Oprah Winfrey

“God can dream a bigger dream for you than you could ever dream for yourself. Success comes when you surrender to that dream—and let it lead you to the next best place.” Oprah Winfrey

Marva Collins

"Success doesn't come to you . . . you go to it."

American Educator

1936 -

Many people desire success — dream about success, but few are willing to put in the work necessary to be successful.  We hear in the news about people being overnight successes only to find out they had been creating in the shadows for years.  Overnight success is a rarity.  Most people spend years honing their craft before they achieve success.

If you are waiting at the bus stop for success to pick you up and take you on the trip of your life, forget it.  It is not going to happen.  Get off the bench and start walking.  Soon you will be running and eventually you will be driving your own car.  Success comes to him who works hard and long.

Zig Ziglar

"In your hands you hold the seeds of failure or the potential for greatness.... The choice is yours."

American Speaker / Author

1926 -

Life is about the choices we make.  And in our hands are the seeds of our failure as well as the seeds of our success.  Which seeds have you chosen to plant today?  Have you chosen to do the things that will bring out your greatness and help you reach your potential?  Or have you chosen to follow a path that leads to destruction.  Do you read books that bring you insights and wisdom?  Do you associate with friends who encourage you?  Do you feed your mind as well as your body?  Do you love yourself and give thanks for what you have been given?  Whom have you helped?  What lives have you touched?  Do you give more to others than you get?  The choices we make today will create the lives we live tomorrow.

Here is Zig with the story of how your attitude makes all the difference.  The choice is yours.

Pablo Picasso

"Success is dangerous.  One begins to copy oneself, and to copy oneself is more dangerous than to copy others.  It leads to sterility."

— Pablo Picasso

Spanish Artist

1881 - 1973

When a creative leader becomes successful, it is easy to fall into the success trap.  Your audience wants you to sing the same songs, paint the same pictures or write the same stories.  And you may be afraid they won't appreciate the new you and your new work.  So you don't try to ideas.  Or you try something new and your audience rejects you.  You need to be constantly reinventing yourself and your art.  Picasso was know for reinventing himself.  He never stayed with one art form or one artistic technique.  He was always seeking the new.  He did not let success define him.  He defined success.

Thomas Edison

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."

American Inventor

1847 - 1931

Since we don't know the future, we often give up on our goals before we should.  Sometimes the closer we come to achieving our goals, the more discouraged we become.  To us the night appears to be darkest before the dawn.  So the key is not to give up on your dreams.  Hold fast to your dreams.

Thomas Edison held over a thousand U.S. Patents in his lifetime.  He invented the phonograph, the motion picture camera, a stock ticker, a vote recorder and the light bulb.  In 1914 the phonograph factory of Thomas Edison burnt to the ground.  Over night he lost more than 3 million dollars.  The next day when Edison was walking through this burnt out factory, his son came over to console him.  Thomas Edison turned to his son and said:  "There is great value in disaster.  It burns up all our mistakes.  Thank God we can start anew."  Within three months, he went out and build a new factory, redesigned the phonograph and gave the world a brand new phonograph.

Harley King

"May you wait patiently for your success with the belief and confidence that it will come."

— Harley King

American Speaker/Poet

1949 -

Many of us are impatient.  We can't wait.  We are in a hurry.  Yet success has its own timetable.  You can't hurry it.  So develop patience and have faith that when the time is right you will receive your moment in the sun.  Enjoy the moment.  Enjoy the present.  Don't worry about tomorrow.

Here are three of my short poems written in 2011.

What color

are your dreams,

my friend?

Bright blue?

Midnight red?

A thin pink?

I gather my fears in my hands.

###

I've grown old

with doubt,

a finger of time

between clouds

of darkness.

I open my mouth

and swallow the wind.

###

I am

the moon,

a faded light,

a distant dream.

Hold me

in your arms

that I may be free.

Ann Patchett

"In my 20s I worked as a waitress and wrote on my off-hours.  I remember asking myself, 'If you never get published or have any success, if you have to spend the rest of your life being a waitress, is this still what you want to do?'  And I thought, 'Absolutely.'  Making art is my happiness."

American Novelist

1963 -

If you knew that you would never be famous or rich, would you still write?  Would you still paint?  Or would you quit and go into some other line of work?  And if you honestly can answer that you would keep on writing or painting, then you are on the right path.  Keep doing what you are doing?

Does your creative work make you happy?  Do you enjoy the time you spend writing or painting?  Would you do it whether you were paid or not?  And if you can honestly answer yes to these questions, then keep doing it.

Barbara Walters

"Success can make you go one of two ways — it can make you a prima donna, or it can smooth the edges, take away the insecurities, let the nice things come out."

American Journalist

1929 -

Early success has destroyed both artists and writers.  Just like actors and athletes, writers and artists stumble under the weight of success and often make serious mistakes.  Some stop writing so they can live the life of a writer.  Some start drinking to overcome their anxieties.  Just because the first novel was a huge success doesn't mean the second or third will be.  Now that I am well up there in age, I am glad that I did not have success when I was young.  Success often blocks the creative spirit and one has to spend time playing the role of the great writer or artist.  My wish for you is that when you become successful that you handle it with grace and calm.

Natalie Goldberg

"Some people write for fifteen years with no success and then decide to quit.  Don't look for success and don't quit.  If you want writing, write under all circumstances.  Success will or will not come, in this lifetime or the next.  Success is none of our business.  It comes from the outside.  Our job is to write, to not look up from our notebook and wonder how much money Norman Mailer earns."

— Natalie Goldberg

American Writer

1948 -

The creative arts are not about fame and fortune.  They are about creating.  If success is what you seek then you ought to pursue another profession.  For every actor who becomes rich, famous and invited to the Oscars, there are thousands who act in small community plays for the love of it.  For every writer who reaches the best sellers list, there are thousands who toil daily with neither recognition nor financial rewards, simply for the love of writing.  For every musician whose songs top the music charts, there are millions who sing at church or in the shower.  Our work is to create, not to become rich and famous.  Are you focused on creating or are you daydreaming about being rich and famous?

Marian Wright Edelman

"Failure is just another way to learn how to do something right."

American Activist

1939 -

Too often we believe failure is something bad.  We have been conditioned by our parents, our schools and society to believe that failure is a negative.  We need to change our perspective of what failure means.  A failure is an opportunity to try again — to start over, to have another chance.  A failure is not the end of the road unless we give up.  Failure is a great teacher.  We learn about ourselves and others.  Sometimes we learn more in failure than we do through success.  So the next time you receive a rejection slip, view it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Roger Fry

Self-Portrait
(1928)

"Art is a passion or it is nothing."

English Artist

1866 - 1934

Are you passionate about your creative work?  Do you love what you do?  If you are not passionate about your work, then I suggest you look for another line of work.  Creative leaders need to be passionate about what they do.  There are plenty of naysayers in your way who will keep you from succeeding if you are not passionate.  Passion is one of the key ingredients to your success.

Jim Rohn

"Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment."

American Author, Motivational Speaker

1930 - 2009

We all have dreams and goals but many of us never achieve them because we have not mastered the art of self-discipline.  I define self-discipline as sacrificing short-term pleasure for the achievement of long-term goals.  If you want to be a novelist but you never seem to find the time to write, you will never write your novel.  If you want to be a painter but spend your time partying with friends and not painting, you may never produce any great paintings.  The arts require a lot of self-discipline.  We need to be able to sacrifice the pleasure of the moment for the achievement of long-term success.

Mark Twain

"A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it."

American Writer

1835 - 1910

Do you tell everything in your stories or do you leave somethings to the readers imagination?  The best writing does not tell everything.  The best writing allows the readers to read between the lines.  The same is true of art.  A painting shouldn't tell everything.  Some things should be left to the imagination.  What are you leaving out of your creative work?  Do you know what should and what should not be left out?

Margaret Atwood

"Writing is an act of faith: I believe it's also an act of hope, the hope that things can get better than they are."

— Margaret Atwood

Canadian Writer

1939 -

Does your creative work give you hope?  Does your painting give you hope that your life will improve?  Does your writing give you hope about the progress of the human race?  I believe creative leaders have to have lots of hope.  Why else would they struggle for years with no prospect of success?  Every time a writer sends his short stories, poetry and novels to a publisher he is full of hope that this time it will be accepted.  A painter may paint for years and never sell a painting, always hoping that the next one will sell.  Never give up.  There is always tomorrow.  Have faith.  You will succeed.

Truman Capote

(1959)

"Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor."

American Writer

1924 - 1984

People, unfortunately, strive to be perfect and not make any mistakes.  For creative leaders, perfection creates paralysis and immobility.  Painters who seek perfection stay with the tried and true because they don't want to risk failure.  Writer won't step outside their comfort zone because of the fear of failure.  We are a society driven to be perfect and we don't tolerate mistakes.  Yet, without failure there is no success.  Failure provides the flavor to life.

For a society that dwells on perfection, we crave seeing others fail.  We love to watch the mighty fall.  We cling to our entertainment shows to see which celebrity screwed up.  Who is going through a divorce.  Who is sleeping with who.  Who is fighting with who.  If I began naming names, the list would never end.  Every moment of every day someone stumbles and falls.

Yet, it is in the moments of failure that some of the greatest novels have been written and some of the greatest paintings have been painted.  Without the pain of failure, there would be no joy in success.  So I challenge you to step outside your comfort zone and try something new.

Maya Angelou

"Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it."

American Author

1928 -

How do you define success?  Many people define success as wealth and fame, but these are illusionary and short-lived.  Just think of the stories you have read of rich people who are now homeless.

(2011)

I think Maya Angelou is on the right track when she says that success is about liking and loving yourself and what you do.  As creative artists we may never have fame or fortune, but if we like what we do, we are truly blessed.  Do you love what you do?  Do you enjoy painting, writing, acting or singing?  And most creative leaders will answer that they do love what they do.  The more difficult questions is:  do you like yourself?

Happiness is accepting who you are, no matter what the warts, scars and pimples.  Some people live a lifetime and never learn to like themselves.  We are all humans and we have all made mistakes.  Maya Angelou describes many of the challenges and mistakes of her life in her six autobiographies, including her rape at age eight as well as working as a teenage prostitute. Today Angelou at 83 is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, actress and filmmaker.  Dr. Angelou has received over 30 honorary degrees.  In 2011 President Barack Obama presented Maya Angelou with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Have you learned to like yourself?  To accept who you are and from where you have come?  True success is about loving oneself.

Here is Maya Angelou reading her poem, And Still I Rise.

Sam Savage

"I really do think that art can save you in some sense.  It's the last meaning, unless you're religious — and I'm not religious.  It's the only secular vehicle for transcendence we have.  It's an immediate self-validating experience.  It lifts you beyond your mortal clay."

American Novelist

1940 -

Art is a form of salvation.  Through art we can discover something beyond ourselves to believe in.  Through art we can discover who we are and who we are meant to be.  Through our art we may even find eternal life.  We can live beyond the grave.

The story of Sam Savage provides hope for all unrecognized painters, poets and novelists.  He toiled for years as an unpublished writer.  At the age of 55 he gave up writing.  A part of him died.  At the age of sixty, he picked up the pen again and wrote.  He said: "I started writing again because I'd given up.  I didn't expect anything from it."  In 2006, Coffee House Press published his first novel, Firmin, told from the perspective of a book eating rat.  The novel became an international best seller.

Sam said in an interview with Kevin Larimer, "I just sort of quit — gave up completely.  I was fifty-five years old and I just gave up.  And it was total and sincere."  I believe he probably gave up because he felt like a failure.  And society would probably call him a failure.  But I don't think he was.  We make a mistake when we think that one has to be published to be a success.

For me, success comes from the creative process itself.  If you create, you are a success.  The marketing and selling of the work is a business issue.  Just because there is not an audience for your work does not make you less successful as an artist.  Don't confuse the business of art with the creative process.  Remember that the creation of artistic works is a form of spiritual salvation.
