"Painting is self-discovery."

— Jackson Pollack

American Painter

1912 - 1956

I believe all arts are about self-discovery whether we are talking about painting or literature or theater.  In the process of creating we discover who we are and whom we may want to be.  Maybe we learn something about ourselves in how a character in a story behaves.  Or we see ourselves through the lens of a photographer or painter.  Or we play a character on stage who is are alter ego.

What have you learned about yourself today?  Last week?  Last month?  Last year?  Life is a journey of self-discovery and change.  Are you growing and developing as you age?

"The painting has a life of its own.  I try to let it come through."

American Artist

Many painters and writers talk about the work of art as having a life of its own.  For me, this is one of the joys of the creative process — that moment of discovery when I am following the story, waiting to see where it will take me.  If the creative leader gets in the way of creative process, the work of art can be disfigured, paralyzed or even still born.  Don't let your idea of the painting or the story prevent the true work of art from being born.  What is in your mind's eye may not happen on paper or canvas.

Here is the trailer of a must see Jackson Pollock movie directed by Ed Harris.

"Every good artist paints what he is."

Painters and writers are attracted to the subjects they are supposed to paint and write about.  Are there certain themes that run through your work?  Do you paint the same type of picture over and over?  I paint, draw and sculpt lots of masks and it does not matter what medium I  am working in.  In my poetry you will find the themes of God, death and sex.  Pretty boring, right.  Every writer talks about God, death and sex, but what makes us unique is our approach to the subject.  I have never met a writer who talks about God in the way that I do.
