Pick up any book on writing and the person will invariably say something about writing about what you know.  And that is probably true about any of the arts.  The best place to start is with something you know something about.  That does not mean you have to know everything.  And we have all had experiences including emotional ones.  It is the emotion that we need to convey in our art.
